South of Owl Creek Pass in the Cimarron Range of Colorado's San Juan Mountains, this 11,781 ft peak and its environs served as a backdrop in the original 1969 movie True Grit. I believe there is something special about this place because every time I visit it I make new friends. Crystal Mill
Crystal Mill, or the Old Mill, is an 1892 wooden powerhouse located on an outcrop above the Crystal River near Crystal, Colorado. It is accessible from Marble, Colorado via 4x4. Although called a watermill, it is more correctly denoted as a compressor station which used a water turbine to drive an air compressor, and was originally built with a horizontal wheel. The compressed air was then used to power other machinery or tools.This was my first take on one of Colorado's more iconic images. The powerhouse, the five miles of narrow, winding road to get there, the small town of Crystal at the top, and the incredibly beautiful surroundings are every bit as spectacular as I imagined.

I was up early to catch first light, and was standing completely still behind my tripod when this deer entered my frame. My presence was apparently a surprise, because a few seconds later the deer was gone. Stand perfectly still in the same spot at sunrise or sunrise or sunset and you'll experience some of the most precious moments.

The East River flows south from Emerald Lake in the Maroon Bells Wilderness to a confluence with the Taylor River that becomes the Gunnison River. On this particular day, a welcome drizzle turned to rain, which quickly gave way to a downpour, giving the appearance that the reflective river was meandering its way into the clouds. Moments later, the reflection and the downpour were gone, leaving just a river in the rain.

The unusual rainstorm, with an extraordinary amount of lightning, was just beginning to dissipate as we started our ascent up the Great Sand Dunes. We'd been briefed by the park ranger on the lightning hazard and had collected enough information that we decided to proceed with our climb. By the time we reached the top, the storm had dissipated, leaving the clearest of skies and revealing a breathtaking view of the Milky Way. The next morning we met two campers who spent that same evening standing in opposite corners of their tent in a lightning storm, trying to keep the wind from lifting their tent off the ground.

One of the tiniest and most beautiful flowers I've encountered in Colorado, this wildflower is one of the earliest blooming plants. Blooming is followed by long plumed seedpods, which look like puffs of smoke, which give the plant its name. The seedpods are covered with hairs, which render it yet another common name, "Old Man's Whiskers"
